We have been constantly advocating for the timely release of Interim Compensation grants for Child Sexual Abuse victims in Assam; a grant which we believe is their right, and is also critical to their healing process.
As Support Persons, we have filed several applications on behalf of children; we have accompanied children for the compensation hearings to make sure that no child was left out; we ensured that the Gauhati High Court's Juvenile Justice Committee intervened when some of our applications were rejected by an earlier official from the District Legal Services Authority, Kamrup Metro district; we followed up with the Police for timely reports; we did several meetings with the Special Judge, Special Public Prosecutor, the District and the State Legal Services Authority for the disbursement of the compensations that were pending; and we raised the issue of delayed compensation grants at every public forum.
And finally, 19 of our children (from the batch of applications filed in 2021) were finally awarded with Interim Compensation, by the District Legal Services Authority of Kamrup Metro district, Assam.
A whopping total amount of 11 Lakh Rupees were granted to the 19 children.
We are happy !
